MFVFD officials confirmed the names of the victims as David Howard, age 47, who passed away on September 5 at Cabell Huntington Hospital on Monday, September 5, due to his injuries from the explosion and, at press time, Diane Bailey remains on life support. The Kentucky State Police arson investigator was contacted since the cause of the explosion had not been determined, with the arson investigator on scene this week, though no information has been released about the case at press time, despite the SI reaching out to KSP. Middle Fork Volunteer Fire Department Chief Scott Castle confirmed to Mortimer Media Group there was evidence that there had been an explosion, given that all four exterior walls were blown outwardly, and debris could be found in yards and in trees nearby. To help ambulance crews better serve the patients, fire department members volunteered to drive the ambulances so all the EMTs could work on the victims while en route.
Both sustained serious burns to large portions of their bodies.
The two victims could not be flown out due to weather, so they were transported via ambulance to local area hospitals. Middle Fork Volunteer Fire Department, located nearby, was on the scene within minutes, at which time two victims were already out of the residence and at a relative’s house next door. Sunday morning, September 4, after a next-door neighbor reported hearing an explosion and seeing fire.
