Today, it’s easier than ever to release your own game on Steam, itch.io, GOG, or a number of other online vendors. Now, you can invite other players into your game and dabble in some fun co-op though, single-player space exploration remains very much the gist of the game. Today, the game is practically what it promised to be all those years ago - a chance for you to traverse the galaxy as a bold space-farer, and go through an entertaining crafting-survival gameplay loop on each planet you visit.Īlso, the multiplayer aspect of the game has been flashed out as well.

But the developers rallied together and provided gamers with 6 years of completely free updates and DLC. The gameplay was shallow, and there were all kinds of game-breaking bugs. However, the initial release of the game was far from the lofty goals set by its developers - and the hype they built up around it. And they all await you to visit and study them on your very own Star Trek-esque adventure! The possibilities seemed endless. The reason Sony gave them so much marketing space was clear: the elevator pitch for No Man’s Sky was simply too exciting to pass up.Ī complete galaxy with a near-infinite number of solar systems, orbited by procedurally generated planets, each with its own distinct ecosystems, plants, and creatures. Since its first unveiling at the 2014 E3, it was the most anticipated indie game of the generation - and the first one to be revealed by a major publisher like Sony. No Man’s Skyīesides carrying a decent amount of Spore’s DNA, No Man’s Sky is also probably the biggest comeback story in gaming history. The most interesting thing that the game does with its Spore origins is that, besides armor and weapons, your heroes’ body parts affect their stats as well. You’ll be switching between this large roster of characters in your battle against the Darkspore - the ancient spore-like beings that rebelled against your kind long ago.Īs far as the RPG elements and gameplay go, the game is pretty straightforward you won’t find many clever twists and surprises here.

Instead, what you get is the option of customizing up to 25 “genetic heroes” - though each of them comes in four variations.

And that’s simultaneously the game’s biggest advantage and setback it seems like the developers missed a trick by not harnessing the full power of the system. That also means Darkspore has an (albeit more limited) version of the Creature Creator from the base Spore game. Unlike the combo of different genres that makes up Spore, its Darkspore cousin is much more focused: a simple sci-fi action RPG, built in the Spore engine. And if you liked Spore, you’re probably going to love this one. And while Spore gave us countless hours of creature-battling fun, the idea was that the creature creator could be used in other, more fleshed-out titles later on.Īt the end of the day, those ideas only ever resulted in one game: Darkspore. Maxis invested most of their efforts into the creature creation system. Spore was always more of an evolutionary playground than a true in-depth game - at least until you reach the galactic stage.
